Research In Motion's BlackBerry PlayBook is on display at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2011, and we got a hands-on look at the tablet device.

The BlackBerry PlayBook's home screen combines a switcher for running apps plus an app launcher. Here, three apps are alive and running, and all seemed to run speedily at the same time. We saw a YouTube video playing at the same time as a game was running, as well as other apps. You can scroll left and right through the switcher, pulling more running apps onto the screen. This emphasises the PlayBook's multitasking, an area where Research In Motion (RIM) hopes for a competitive advantage over the iPad.

One of the standard features of the PlayBook is the photo gallery. The tablet form factor's major advantage over smartphones is the screen size, so it makes little sense to use badly-ported phone apps which economise on the size of graphical components such as thumbnails or folder illustrations. Again, switching between aspects of the application appeared swift.
