NetApp has tapped Cisco for help in boosting its FlexPod portfolio for tackling big data workloads on converged infrastructures.

The new addition is FlexPod Select, designed specifically to address targeted, "data-intensive" workloads in high-performance computing environments that require the ability to scale quickly and virtually automatically.

Such possible verticals that fit this mold include healthcare, utility companies, and even the entertainment industry.

In addition, Cisco and NetApp are building out their partnership and joint strategy for unified datacenters and dedicated application infrastructures in other ways.

For example, the Cisco Nexus 7000 enterprise class switch will be added to the FlexPod platform for more scalability options by supporting up to 768 10 Gigabit Ethernet ports.

Described as a ready-to-deploy platform, FlexPod Select is also touted as a validated solution for Hadoop deployments.

At this time, there are two configuration options: FlexPod Select with Cloudera including Apache Hadoop (CDH) and FlexPod Select with Hortonworks Data Platform (HDP).
