Citrix on Wednesday launched its mobile device management suite, acquired with the Zenprise purchase, and added new wrinkles as it aims to manage data, mobile apps and security policies too.
XenMobile MDM along with a cloud and mobile bundle is Citrix's effort to revamp the discussion around managing mobile devices and broaden it. Amit Pandey, VP and GM of Mobile Solutions at Citrix and former CEO of Zenprise, said his company is taking mobile device management, secure browsing, application wrapping and tunneling technology, federated identity and access policies and bundling it together.
The core parts of XenMobile manage applications, mobile data and devices.

With the move, Citrix is trying to get a leg up on companies like Mobile Iron and Good Technology. The MDM space is crowded with dozens of vendors. "We're aiming to go beyond MDM into a complete enterprise mobility play," said Pandey. Citrix's bet is that enterprises will want more than just an MDM package.
"MDM isn't dead, but it will have a tough time in a large enterprise," said Pandey. "The bigger the MDM needs the more it becomes about the data and applications."
Pandey added that Zenprise saw the market moving in a broader direction and that partially spurred the sale to Citrix last year. "Standalone MDM will be a tough sell in two to three years," he added.
As a result, Pandey said he expected a wave of MDM consolidation. Here's a look at Gartner's rather crowded MDM Magic Quadrant:
XenMobile will come in two packages. The first one is MDM only. The second one has a complete mobile stack management platform.
The latter version has VPN capability to individual apps and contain them whether they are custom built by the customer or third party. Citrix wraps security around them. In addition, XenMobile will unify app stores in the data center to deliver legacy and native mobile applications.
Overall, Citrix may have a winning pitch with XenMobile MDM. Indeed, Citrix already has a large customer footprint and a history of delivering applications to mobile devices in a secure way. In addition, companies are wrestling with mobile devices and managing bring your own policies that have brought in multiple platforms.
