Cloud payroll service debuts in US market

Summary: Priced at less than $5 per employee per month, Wave Accounting's latest offering is targeted at businesses with fewer than 10 people on staff.

Cloud software developer Wave Accounting has created a U.S. edition of its payroll software, targeted at small businesses with fewer than 10 employees on staff.

Wave Payroll is a complement to the company's accounting software -- but it can also export data to Intuit Quickbooks and generate various financial reports through.

A screenschot of the dashboard appears below:

The service automates the usual tasks associated with managing federal, state and local payroll taxes, and can be used to processes checks or trigger direct deposits.

It also handles vacation requests, and offers an employee dashboard, where they can manage contact information or retrieve pay stubs.

The service costs $5 per employee, per month for the first five employees, but then it scales down to a lower price-per-employee after that. In January 2013, Wave Accounting plans to add a tax deposit and filing service that complements the Payroll offering - priced at $25 per employer per month.

Want to consider some other payroll services while you're checking out this new one, here are four other options specifically targeted at small companies.

  • look nice but...

I've been using Intuit Online payroll (formerly for over 7 years. It's 100% cloud based and you can pay and report taxes electronically with the exception of the state unemployment compensation in some states. I can pay by check or direct deposit to employees, 1099s. I have used it for 15 employees and it only cost me $60 a month with all these features included plus online timesheets and paystub on employee's dashboards.

This is not the same as Intuit Quickbooks Online as cited in the author's other options. It is compatible with Quickbooks software and PeachTree and I believe a few others. Customer service is great, I believe they still keep the Paycycle people on staff and have not brought in people form intuit yet.
