During August, mobile phone shipment in China grew 0.9 percent year-on-year to reach 40.9 units while local brands took up more than a quarter of market share during the first eight months of 2012.

An Sohu IT report Monday cited findings from China Academy of Telecommunication Research (CATR), which noted that shipment of 2G phones dropped 30.4 percent year-on-year to 19.3 million units during August. However, 3G-enabled phones grew 68.5 percent year-on-year to 21.6 million units.

According to CATR, a total of 274 million mobile phones were shipped in the country during the first eight months. Among them were 213 million units of local brand mobile phones, making up 77.7 percent of the market. For the first half of the year, local brands made up three quarters of the market share.

Local brands also made up the majority of the 3G-enabled phones with 84.6 percent share in TD-SCMA phones, 59.4 percent share in WCDMA phones and 82.5 percent share in CDMA 2000 phones.

According to the report, shipment of 3G mobile phones grew 92.4 percent year-on-year to reach 149 million units from January to August 2012. 2G phone shipment dropped 27.1 percent when compared to the same period in 2011 to hit 125.2 million units.

In a past report, analysts told ZDNet Asia that Chinese smartphone vendors were "doing a reasonably good job" when competing against their foreign rivals. Local brands also scored a win when Lenovo became the No. 2 smartphone vendor, surpassing Nokia and Huawei.
