Renren restructures R&D team, introduces mobile unit

Chinese Internet company Renren reorganizes the company and introduces new business unit focused on product development for mobile Internet.

A Tencent Tech report Wednesday, said the mobile unit was spun off from research and development team for social network Renren.com. After the reorganization, the company is now divided into social network Renren.com, mobile unit, online games unit, daily deals site Nuomi and video sharing site www.56.com.

Renren said the R&D team for Renren.com mobile client will be included into Renren.com unit. They will be working with Renren.com desktop PC team to streamline development of the social network.

The new mobile unit will work on new products in the mobile Internet space, including name card scanner app Jingwei Mingpiantong, the report said.

Renren strategy and investment focus for this year is expected to continue in the mobile Internet space.

In its third-quarter financial statement released in November, Renren reported a wider net loss due to increase in bandwidth investments and game development costs.
