Xiaomi to sell handsets via Sina Weibo

Chinese phonemaker Xiaomi is partnering Sina to sell 50,000 units of its 16 gigabyte (GB) Mi2 smartphone directly via the latter's Sina Weibo microblogging platform.

A Sina Tech news report Wednesday said this partnership will provide consumers a one-stop shopping experience from placing orders to making payment. The "rush hour" to place reservations was scheduled to start from 10 a.m. Wednesday to 12 p.m. Thursday, before the official sale commences on the stroke of midnight this Friday, it added.

A separate blog post by The Next Web said payment will be made through the revamped WeiboPay online system, unveiled by Sina earlier this month. The 50,000 smartphone units will only be available to Sina Weibo users.

The microblogging platform, which has 400 million users to date, will help increase the reach for Xiaomi's handsets. As for Sina Weibo, the partnership with Xiaomi is a possible monetization strategy for the future, The Next Web highlighted.

Both Xiaomi and Sina Weibo, however, did not say whether they would continue to collaborate on such sales and marketing tactics in the future.
