If you've ever had to sit in the lobby of a restaurant or needed to look up information while standing in your favorite boutique, then you know that it's useful to have access to a public wireless connection.

That's the motivation behind a new wireless service from Comcast Business: one that provides small businesses with both private WiFi for their back-office applications and a public Xfinity WiFi connection that they can offer to customers.

The offering, called the Business Wireless Gateway, includes a dual-band modem so that SMBs can segment their networks. This nationwide option is actually within most of the carrier's business internet plans (there's the rub, you've got to be a Comcast Internet customer).

On the flip side, if you ARE a customer, your location will be listed on Comcast's interactive WiFi locator map, which you could consider to be a form of marketing. Along the way, you are basically helping Comcast expand the bounds of its public WiFi service. Hmmmmm. When you're on the road, you'll also get free access to that public network.

The "starter" plan, with Internet download speeds of 16 Mbps and upload speeds of 3 Mbps, is priced at $69.95 per month and works for up to three people.
