Datacom buys WA datacentre for $10m

IT services company Datacom today announced its acquisition of Perth iX datacentre in Belmont, Western Australia.

The transaction is worth over $10 million and "represents significant investment for the organisation", according to Datacom. The move follows the building of a datacentre in Auckland that represents a $40 million investment by Datacom.

"The datacentre acquisition is a tremendous achievement for the WA arm of our organisation, a business that is two years old and has achieved considerable growth in such a short time. It is testament to the commitment of our staff and our existing clients for their continued support," Datacom Systems WA's managing director Basil Lenzo said in a statement.

According to Perth iX's website, the datacentre is home to a range of companies and enterprise organisations such as Amcom and Nextgen Networks.

Datacom employs over 3000 staff across its Australian, New Zealand and South East Asian operations.

It may be nearing winter in Australia, but it's been a hot time for datacentres. A new facility has been built in Brisbane by home-grown telco Over The Wire and another is planned for Melbourne by Harbour MSP. Pipe Network's chief executive officer Bevan Slattery has also just announced a new datacentre company. He'll leave his position with Pipe Networks to become involved in the new company in 10 months.

Even Google may be dallying in some Australian datacentre action, with "intense interest" coming from Australian companies enamoured with the search giant's app's suite.
