The Department of Immigration and Citizenship's (DIAC) long-time chief information officer Bob Correll retired on Friday, the department confirmed today.

The department confirmed a report from CIO stating that Correll's retirement had been announced to the staff in the department on Friday and was effective immediately.

The role will be filled by staff within the department until early in May, when Tony Kwan, chief information officer for the Department of Families, Housing, Community Services and Indigenous Affairs (FAHCSIA), takes over the role. ZDNet Australia has asked FAHCSIA who will be replacing Kwan, but had not received a response at the time of writing.

"Tony Kwan will be the new Chief Information Officer, commencing in May," DIAC told ZDNet Australia.

Since taking on the role of CIO in July 2005, Correll oversaw the government's massive $496 million Systems for People overhaul that began in 2006, and was tasked with rebuilding or integrating the department's legacy support systems with a series of portals that provide staff with access to a central database.

The project was developed in response to criticism of the department's poor record-keeping for immigration visas that led to the wrongful detention of Cornelia Rau and Vivian Alvarez in 2005.

The department recruited IT giant IBM to implement the changes in a deal worth $200 million over four years.
