Directory: Mobile Device Management vendors in the US

ZDNet’s directory of MDM vendors has market, product, and contact information on companies that provide mobile device management solutions in the US.
Written by Patrick Gray, Contributor

The "bring your own device" (BYOD) phenomenon is reshaping the way IT is purchased, managed, delivered, and secured. And whether your IT department support a BYOD program or only manages company-issued devices, using the right Mobile Device Management (MDM) solution is critical. MDM applications allow you to control app installation, enforce security policies, remotely wipe and lock devices, detect hacked or jailbroken devices, and more.

To help IT professionals and technology decision makers to navigate the MDM landscape, the editors of ZDNet have compiled a shortlist of MDM vendors that provide products and services in the US. This is not a paid listing, nor is it an exhaustive list; it's an alphabetic glossary of vendors that provide MDM solutions either as a stand-alone, third-party solution or integrated within a larger product suite.

Apple Profile Manager
Company Profile: Apple's low-cost and iOS-specific Profile Manager allows MDM on the cheap for iOS devices. Profile Manager is free with Apple's OS X Lion Server (which will require Mac hardware) and allows for functionality like pushing applications, setting policies, and performing remote wipes.
Geographical Region: Global
Target Market: SMB (No limitation in the product, but device management becomes unwieldy as the number of devices increases. The product is also limited to iOS devices.)
Featured Products: N/A

centrify-v1

Centrify
Company Profile: Centrify provides server- and mobile-based single sign-on and identity management products, allowing iOS and Android devices to integrate with an Active Directory infrastructure. The mobile product is cloud-based and offers a free "community" edition in addition to the paid product. The latter, however, appears to be new to the market and in an early stage in its maturity. A free trial is available for the paid version.
Geographical Region: Global
Target Market: Medium to large enterprises

Good Technology
Company Profile: One of the early leaders in mobile device management, Good offers a mature product focused squarely on the enterprise market. Rather than focusing on device management, however, Good focuses on managing corporate information on mobile devices, an interesting take on the problem of integrating mobile devices into the enterprise. Good supports all major mobile OSes, including Symbian and Windows.
Geographical Region: Global
Target Market: Enterprise
Featured Products: Good for Enterprise, Good Connect, Good Share (trial available)
US Contact: 430 N. Mary Avenue, Suite 200, Sunnyvale, CA 94085

ibmlogo-21-v1

IBM
Company Profile: IBM is a major player in enterprise IT management software with its Tivoli family of products, and it offers Endpoint Manager for Mobile Devices to integrate these devices into an existing Tivoli infrastructure. The product supports all major mobile OSes, and a free trial is available. (Note: IBM is my employer; however, I have no involvement with the Tivoli team or Endpoint Manager save for being required to install it on my company-provided Android phone.)
Geographical Region: Global
Target Market: Enterprise
Featured Products: Endpoint Manager for Mobile Devices
US Contact: 1 New Orchard Road, Armonk, NY 10504-1722

landesk-v1

LANDesk
Company Profile: LANDesk's MDM product offers a rather simple feature set, but it does integrate with the company's larger management product, and it prices the product per user rather than per device or application. If you're already a LANDesk shop, the product may offer visibility into your mobile user base and limited management essentially for free (assuming you're already paying for the LANDesk user fee).
Geographical Region: Global
Target Market: Medium and enterprise
Featured Products: LANDesk Mobility Manager
US Contact: 698 West 10000 South, Suite 500, South Jordan, UT 84095

microsoft-logo-v1

Microsoft
Company Profile: Despite a deep and mature offering for managing workstations and servers, Microsoft's MDM offering is currently scattershot at best. Windows Intune promises to offer standard, multi-platform mobile device management from a cloud-based platform, but it's a relatively new offering and separate from Microsoft's traditional Systems Center offering (although the company promises integration). The good news is that it is available for free trial. In addition to Intune, Microsoft's Exchange Server and hosted Exchange (Office 365) offer basic MDM functionality, like password policy enforcement and remote wipe as part of the product, supporting the major mobile OSes (Android, iOS, and Windows Mobile/Phone). While basic, they may be sufficient for a small business -- and the price is certainly right.
Geographical Region: Global
Target Market: SMB, enterprise
Featured Products: Intune, Exchange ActiveSync, Office 365
US Contact: One Microsoft Way, Redmond, WA 98052-7329

mobileiron-v1

MobileIron
Company Profile: MobileIron offers an enterprise-focused, integrated MDM platform that covers management of both devices and data. The offering can be hosted locally and is available as a cloud application; the firm claims the software can support up to 100,000 devices on a single appliance. A 30-day evaluation version of the product is available, and all major mobile OSes are supported, including BlackBerry, Symbian, and Windows.
Geographical Region: Global
Target Market: Enterprise

sap-v1

SAP/Sybase
Company Profile: SAP offers the Afaria MDM product, which it obtained as part of its Sybase acquisition. Afaria provides standard MDM functionality, including device and application management, as well as a BYOD management component. Afaria also offers a cloud-based application distribution mechanism that leverages Amazon's AWS cloud.
Geographical Region: Global (based in Germany)
Target Market: Enterprise
Featured Products: Afaria
US Contact: 3999 West Chester Pike, Newtown Square, PA 19073

Symantec
Company Profile: Like many large-scale infrastructure management vendors, Symantec's MDM solution is designed to integrate with its other products rather than offering a stand-alone MDM solution. This provides the benefit of integrating mobile devices into the management tools you already know and, in Symantec's case, offering file encryption and integration with the rest of Symantec's security suite.
Geographical Region: Global
Target Market: Enterprise
Featured Products: Symantec Mobile Management Suite (Symantec Mobile Management, Symantec App Center, Symantec Mobile Security)
US Contact: 350 Ellis Street, Mountain View, CA 94043

zenprisecitrixlogo-v1

Zenprise/Citrix
Company Profile: Recently acquired by Citrix, Zenprise offers deep device and mobile application management in an on-premises and cloud-based version. Zenprise covers all the current mobile OSes. Zenprise is somewhat different in that its suite strives to maintain the use of native applications on the device and provide security through data and network encryption rather than forcing users into "special" client applications. A free trial of the suite is available.
Geographical Region: Global
Target Market: Enterprise
Featured Products: Zenprise MobileManager, Zencloud, Zensuite
