While Dropbox's bread and butter is based in the cloud, the file sharing service and storage provider is rolling out a major refresh to the desktop user experience today.

Much like several other social media and cloud-based apps (i.e. Facebook, Box, Google Apps), Dropbox is also targeting real estate on the Mac desktop toolbar at the top of the screen.

With the Dropbox icon and drop-down menu, users should have easier access to notifications and sharing in the default upload folder.

It's a fairly straightforward and simple update, but it is significant because it puts Dropbox on more square-footing with some of the aforementioned cloud storage competitors.

The drop-down menu also keeps Dropbox front and center on the user's computer, reinforcing it as a default but ever-present application.

The San Francisco-based cloud company also has a quick mobile update today for iOS and Android users with notifications for shared folders now popping up on these apps.
