EMC revamps lineup with new storage arrays, systems

For EMC, the wave of products is critical given storage sales have stagnated as customers ponder their technical roadmaps. Customers need to figure out how much storage they can offload to the cloud, the economics of solid-state storage and architectures that set enterprises up for the future yet don't lock them in to one vendor. Given those moving parts, it's no surprise that the storage buying cycle has lengthened.

On Tuesday, EMC outlined what it hopes are answers to those aforementioned issues. Specifically, EMC launched the following:

A revamp of EMC's VMAX3 family of systems that enable customers to move away from hardware and offer more of a enterprise data service. For good measure, EMC acquired TwinStrata and said that public cloud access will be embedded into the VMAX3 systems. The new platform is designed to allow enterprises to manage what storage remains in the data center and where the public cloud makes more sense. VMAX3 improves performance by 3X over previous versions and includes the Hypermax OS, which combines an operating system with a storage hypervisor. The VMAX3 family also includes direct backup to EMC's Data Domain unit.

Overall, the VMAX3 systems can support 100s of virtual machines and scale to 70,000. VMAX3 systems with Hypermax will be available in the third quarter with direct backup, known as ProtectPoint, available in the fourth quarter.

Jeremy Burton, president of products and marketing at EMC, said the new VMAX is usually a big event for the storage giant.

Burton said that VMAX will be able to consolidate storage as well as infrastructure such as backup servers. "There are benefits to running primary backup on the storage array itself," said Burton, who added that automation will also be a key theme.

An upgrade to EMC's Isilon OneFS platform. The upgrade revolves around enabling data lakes, which allow companies to ingest unstructured information and analyze it. The data lake concept is critical to companies that are using big data applications and looking to connect the dots between structured and unstructured information.

In addition, EMC said that its Pivotal big data unit will offer a Isilon-Hadoop bundle.

A series of features and configurations for EMC's XtremIO all-flash arrays. EMC's flash portfolio now includes low-cost configurations that improve density per storage rack and price/performance ratios.

The all-flash arrays include new in-memory options, data compression improvements and configurations that cover more market segments with a 5TB Starter X-Brick. EMC also has new XtremIO clusters that support up to six 20TB X-Bricks. The systems are available immediately.

EMC also outlined general availability for its software defined storage applications ViPR 2.0 and ViPR SRM 3.5. The software is also available as an appliance.

  • Storage is dirt cheap

    Storage is dirt cheap these days unless you go SSD or buy something from EMC. I don't know about other businesses but for the one I work for, it does not make sense to buy super expensive storage from either the cloud or from companies like EMC. EMC has been claiming for a while now that they offer affordable solutions for SMB but I still think they are it's too expensive for all but the big spenders. It makes a lot more sense to keep what you got these days and just add on. We have been moving our less critical files off to super-low cost storage arrays which has freed up a ton of space for higher end storage. SSD is in the future for sure but prices still remain restrictive in that space. I'm jealous of the people who have all flash arrays. Must be nice!

      Amen brother! For SMBs the temptation to move terabytes into the cloud, even with its advantages, is tempered by the low cost of keeping it local with low-cost arrays. At such low cost it's often more cost effective to use several local arrays for primary storage & backup, & add a low cost cloud backup for protection. A real incentive for the cloud & network providers to lower their costs is the low cost of staying mostly local on cheap storage systems.

    • Low Cost.

      I think the product that they are referring to as being affordable for SMBs is VNXe and up. The VNXe and VNX lines are pretty much competitive with similar sized systems from just about anyone else. They are also designed for SMBs.

      VMAX is a pretty pricey product. You wouldn't buy one of these for a NAS for a School or even a School District. But the VNXe line maybe. VNX maybe for a larger School District.

      The point is, like any product line it's not once size fits all. And this article seems to focus mainly on the top end EMC products, especially with newer features. For instance, the XtremeIO product is all SSD but you could conceivably order a bottom tier VNX with only SSDs if you wanted. They just don't cover that here. And why would they, this is a news blip not a sales sheet.

    Electromagnetic compatibility being essential to coexistence between use of the radio spectrum and the deployment of many types of equipment, EMC is an engineering discipline thoroughly woven into laws and regulatory compliance regimes worldwide,. Perhaps EMC Corporation of New England (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/EMC_Corporation) has not yet protested this abuse of its trademark (EMC2) but while it is interesting to receive requests for resume's from less than well informed recruiters, or, to be charitable, their robots, it should not need saying that better shorthand for storage technology could be devised.

      kas5s: EMC2 is an abbreviation for the original name of the company, Egan and Moreno Computer Corporation. if you check acronym.com, you'll find 68 different uses of the abbreviation - most of them related to electric magnetic controls to the Energetic Matrix Church to my favorite: Even More Confused.

      With 550 million people speaking English and only 26 letters in the alphabet you're going to run into lots of duplication... And us geeks never really learned to type, so we invent abbreviations for everything...
