Enterprises catch relative lull in Q1, DDoS attacks
Enterprise distributed denial of service (DDoS) attacks eased a bit in the first quarter relative to the first, but were up 11 percent from a year ago, according to Akamai's State of the Internet report.
The security takeaway from the report is that trends have been volatile. Enterprise attacks were down 49 percent sequentially in the first quarter as business services and financial services industries weren't targeted as much, reported Akamai.
Public service attacks surged largely due to attacks on Singapore's government. Overall, industries saw an uptick in attacks. Akamai also looked at repeated attacks against the same target and found one in four were hit a few times.
Of the 164, organizations that faced DDoS attacks in the first quarter of 2014, 43 (26%) suffered repeated attacks. Five organizations were targeted more than five times within the quarter, with 17 distinct attacks the most attacks on one target.
The key point with that stat is that security is a lot like sports---you run the same play over and over until the other team can stop it.
