Global datacentre provider Equinix has confirmed that the first phase of its fifth datacentre in Switzerland is open for business.

Equinix announced on Wednesday that 1,062 square metres of customer space was now live at the Zurich based datacentre.

It said that the "ZH5" datacentre was expected to provide approximately 6,670 square metres of customer space when finished.

Equinix said that the datacentre would be 100 percent powered by renewable energy resources.

The datacentre is located 10km from Zurich city centre and provides customers with connectivity to 90 network service providers, in addition to the Swiss stock exchange, the Equinix Internet Exchange and Swiss IX Internet Exchange.

"With two of the largest internet exchanges in Switzerland at their disposal, customers will have immediate access to leading levels of network density and ecosystems," Equinix Switzerland managing director Marco Dottarelli said.
