A major outage for one of the most popular destinations on the internet might feel more like a case of the Mondays, but that's the present reality on Friday.

Visitors to Facebook were abruptly turned away across all web and mobile channels, starting around 9AM PT/12PM ET.

For the time being, this appears to be the only status update on the News Feed coming out of Menlo Park:

Sorry, something went wrong. We're working on getting this fixed as soon as we can.

It is not clear yet whether the downtime is a datacenter-related issue or the result of external parties.

ZDNet pinged Facebook for comment, and we will update this post once we hear back.

UPDATE: Facebook came back online for many who were affected by the outage approximately 20 minutes later. We'll continue to reach out to Facebook to verify the cause behind the incident.

UPDATE x2: A Facebook spokesperson responded, "We’re aware that some people are currently having trouble accessing Facebook. We’re working to get things back to normal as quickly as possible."

UPDATE x3: Facebook followed up with one more comment just after noon PT: "Earlier this morning, some people had trouble accessing Facebook for a short time. We quickly investigated and have fully restored service for everyone. We’re sorry for the inconvenience."
