Network security provider Fortinet is expanding into the application delivery space through the acquisition of Coyote Point.

Coyote Point, headquartered in Millerton, N.Y., specializes in developing server load-balancing and ADC solutions for mid-market and enterprise companies.

Fortinet highlighted a statistic from Gartner that spending in the ADC space now surpasses $1.5 billion with an annual growth rate of 15 percent. In a nutshell, there in lies the motivation for this purchase.

Thus, Coyote Point's load-balancing and delivery solutions will be integrated with Fortinet's network security portfolio to provide a more comprehensive platform for optimizing enterprise application environments.

Fortinet cited prepared comments from IDC research manager John Grady as further evidence. Grady described that "as more enterprises turn to the cloud, data centers are going to require higher performance solutions coupled with strong security."

Thus, he continued, "security and application delivery must work hand-in-hand, to ensure quality of service while still preventing attacks."

The general idea is that now Fortinet should be able to deliver all of this at once.

Fortinet assured in the announcement that there won't be an immediate changes to Coyote Point's products, channel programs or customer support.

Financial terms of the deal have not been disclosed, but Fortinet asserted that it will not be material to its first quarter operating results.
