When your location has a history of significant seismic events, you look for solutions that let your business operations continue, even in the face of earthquakes and their aftermath. That’s the message that Fujitsu is sending to customers with its latest datacenter rollouts in western Japan.

Fujitsu is a serious datacenter service provider in Japan, operating 68 storage facilities in the country to support customer outsourcing. It also designs, builds and sells datacenter and IT equipment, and with their latest modular rollout, it presents customers with two additional options for datacenter design: seismic isolation and earthquake-resistant designs.

With its earthquake-resistant design, Fujitsu is implementing a single story of earthquake-resistant construction expandable to 600 racks, free-air cooling, and basic datacenter specifications implemented with the idea of handling low-level seismic events without causing interruptions in operations.

In Fujitsu's seismic isolation design, the company is working with a multi-level facility built for expansion of up to 1000 racks which contain all of the features of the earthquake-resistant design, and power and other provisioning designed for emergency operations when the utility grid is offline. The earthquake-resistant design can be upgraded to the more robust seismic-isolation design at the customer’s request. The features of the higher-availability design provide individual options to customers of their modular-datacenter solution.

Other goals of both designs include providing the energy efficiency that has come to be expected from datacenter providers with a target PUE of 1.2 for a complete datacenter module, integration with Fujitsu’s operations management system, and a completely modular design that allows for growth of the customer’s facility as their business needs grow. Datacenters of both the seismic isolation and earthquake resistant design are now operational at its Akashi System Center datacenter hub in Japan.
