The Internet is no longer a safe place to be. Spam email and Internet-related crime is rife because unscrupulous people are making a living out of exploiting users' unprotected surfing habits, email addresses and data stored on hard disk drives. Tenebril's GhostSurf 2005 Platinum helps to keep your personal information safe while you browse the Internet and helps to reduce the risk of being hacked or targeted with unwanted email.

The software is fairly basic, but it's effective, and works by scrambling your IP address whenever you connect to the Internet. It comes with some useful utilities too, allowing you to remove your browser’s history, delete cookies, adware and spyware programs, as well as remove ad pop-ups (only available with Platinum version). Additionally, its 'Vault' locks away data in a password-protected folder to keep your files and folders away from prying eyes.

Similar to a good firewall package, GhostSurf 2005 Platinum lets you customise your privacy levels in real time to suit your surfing needs, enabling you to block personal information, mask your IP address and even encrypt your Internet connection. You can see and block every piece of data that your computer puts out over the Internet, determine if a site is trustworthy by reading relatively detailed data on the registrant, domain name, contact information and location, as well as prevent access to selected Web sites. The software works with all Web browsers and supports anonymous instant messaging, Internet Relay Chat (IRC) and news feeds.

The software’s utilities are accessed from a central interface, allowing you to remove personally-identifying information from Web requests, opt to send your data through Tenebril’s anonymous hubs to hide your IP address and block Internet traces back to you, as well as encrypt all the Web data to and from your computer, preventing everyone (from your network administrator to your ISP) from seeing what you’re doing.

Like ZoneLabs' excellent ZoneAlarm firewall applications, privacy levels in GhostSurf 2005 are set by moving a slider. At its lowest level, Normal, data from your computer is set directly to the Internet without modifying, rerouting or encrypting it. When set at the highest privacy level, Secure, personal information is removed, rerouted and encrypted, helping to create a much more secure working environment.

Those wanting to tweak their configuration a little further will appreciate the way you can exclude certain Web sites from the privacy level, thereby granting a particular site that requires personal information, such as an online banking site or a Web-based email site. A number of sites are already listed in the 'special sites' list, although you can modify these if you want to completely restrict the transfer of personal information.

GhostSurf 2005 also provides some basic feedback, such as the number of blocked cookies, sent invisible requests, sent secure requests, speed-cached requests, pop-up ads blocked, as well as in-page ads blocked. This is very informative if you like to know what the software is doing. There are no reporting tools and there's no way to create and analyse log files, although this is hardly surprising considering the relatively low cost of the software, as well as the fact that it’s designed for individuals rather than workgroups.

When using Ghostsurf Platinum, my Web surfing comes to a crawl. I configured Firefox to not use it, and IE to use it, just to make sure nothing else was interfering. Their proxy servers must be very very overloaded. So far, two emails to tech support have gone unanswered.

Great product -- finally, a product that delivers what it advertises.

I was frustrated when trying to make sure it was compatible with AOL...but it's not bad.

Could not get the program working correctly with Norton Internet Security running. Wrote customer service and received answer back to contact Norton. Sent a reply back to the CS rep and received back an additional comment to "disable" Norton when using GhostSurf! Very irresponsible on their part.

Bought a retail box. Horrible from get-go. If it works it's slower than dial-up and frequently says page cannot be displayed like you're not even connected. Turn it off and it's fine. This from a house on DSL with nothing more than ZoneAlarm. Switched to Stealthsurf and that is what I thought this would be. Fast and seamless most of the time, with a slow-down once in a while. Use that, forget Ghost Ship.

It just brings down your Net speed. It may not happen, and if it doesn't, it is an excellent program. I recommend it.

Used to have Anonymiser, but it wouldn't let me access the pages I need anonymity the most -- e.g. online banking. Then after a re-install it shut me out completely & could find no support as all links were dead. In contrast GhostSurf installed easily, took seconds to set up, wealth of features and easy to work with and Spycatcher detected several my other security apps had missed. Recommended.

Of the privacy software packages I've tried so far, GhostSurf is the easiest to use, and it doesn't slow down my Internet connection.

I've also noticed that it helps to have as much memory on your pc as possible. The more you have, the more you'll cease to notice your computer slowing because of these privacy software packages.

The most unique feature of this program is the ability to mask your IP address. But that only works part of the time. Since everything goes through their servers it simply means that there is a limited amount of people who can use this IP masking at anytime. Out of 5 attempts at different times during the day, IP masking works only once if you are lucky. Without IP masking, you might get more value from other programs

GhostSurf worked great after first installing -- but after restarting computer it would not work at top 2 secure settings and would not connect to sites. Something happens to change things after restarting the computer.

Strangely, this program worked for a few days, but then, nothing would stop its ever increasing RAM consumption. It brought my PC (with 2GB of RAM and 3500+ processor) to a halt.

Their tech support (probably outsourced) is terrible.

I had to uninstall the software because I could no longer view BBC or MSN video news streams. and then I found out that neither browser now allowed me to log into my web based emails that require cookies.
And YES I listed the mail services in the ALLOW areas.

EVEN after uninstalling Ghostsurf 2005 I can still not log into web based emails on this machine.

Wish i had never installed it.

THE PRO SIDE. YEs it was cool to know that you could surf without hackers being able to see your IP.

This is the worst fifty bucks I've ever spent! It slowed my entire system to a crawl and I have a very fast system. I run a Pentium D 3.0 Ghz Dual-Core processor on an ABIT AW8-MAX motherboard with 1 gig of high performance DDR2 RAM and a Seagate 160 gig SATA150 hard drive. Nothing, I mean nothing would open up in windows. After uninstalling Ghost Surf, my system works fine. This was such a waste of money!

I have been using Anonymizer for the last couple of years and i have been relativeley pleased with my experiece with it. Recently though, it has become much slower than it once used to be (even though my PC runs perfectly well without it), so i have decided to scout around for another product.

The rave reveiws from magazines suggested that GHOSTSURF 2005 PLATINUM is a good alternative to the Anonymizer service and so this spurred me on to look a bit more closely at the software.

It was only when i started reading the user reveiws of the Ghostsurf 2005 Platinum product, that i began to have apprehensions about it. Virtually all the people that had tried it, had something bad to say about their experience.

My subscription to Anonymizer had already elapsed, and in spite of the poor reveiws, i opted to give the GhostSurf a try via their Free 15 day Trial.

Having downloaded the trial version from their homepage, i was ready to give GhostSurf a shot. I tried to start it to run, and was then informed that i had already run the 15 day trial version on my PC, so i would need to 'buy' the unlock code.

I knew this to be totally untrue...Only i have access to my PC and i have owned it from new, and i have NEVER before even heard of GhostSurf, let alone try it on my PC.

I was a little p***ed off at having wasted my time loading the program, and i duly un-installed it from my hard drive....but after uninstalling, i recieved the message that not all its components had been uninstalled and that this would have to be done manually!

According to the professional reveiwers of ghostsurf, (who no doubt benefit financially from advertising placed by ghostsurf), the product is better than sliced bread ! ....but according to real people who have succumbed to the reveiws and downloaded the product, it is a total waste of time ( and in some cases has caused real problems for them)

You can guess that my opinion of GS is not very complimentary.

    I would really ha

I just recently bought this on Ebay, works just fine for a couple of days, now it's not even doing anything, my browser doesn't load IE, firefox doesn't load either if I put the setting to invisible. The eye doesn't blink or turn orange. I surf on a forum, and one of the poster have my ip address broadcast, that's when I know this is not working at all. Google search for technical support, but can't find anything. I wish I have read all the comments here before I purchase it, what a waste.

    This program may be good for anonymous surfing, no way for the user to tell if it is working or not however; ie) the program does not tell you what is going out or coming in;
no feedback like a ping would show you.
The SpyCatcher program is weak; it does not show you what is cached or where it is,
ie) it indicates "97 images cached", OK, so where are they? are they on my computer?
Can I view them? Can I delete them???

It also "found" an "unknown Trojan"???
What the heck; I have TrendMicro, SpySweeper, and SpyWare Doctor, and Lavasoft SE, they never found an "unknown Trojan".

What that means to me is that it found one of my programs, didn;t know what it was and flagged it as a Trojan.

    It also "found" a "";
again, none of my other programs found that, so it makes me wonder, and on and on.

Do not buy this program for the SpyCatcher part of it,
definitely not up to par with the big boys.

Is this company still in business? I submitted questions to their support 4 days ago after I gave up trying to use it and ran their Uninstall program. I am still waiting for resolution. Even their Uninstall program would not run correctly. It locked up my PC forcing me to reboot.
