GitHub, the online repository for software projects using the Git revision control system has revealed in a blog post that it has grown its registered users from 6,000 to 3.5 million and its repositories from 2,500 to six million, since it went public in 2008.

GitHub, which turned five-years-old on Thursday, had one million users in September 2011 and three million in January this year.

Co-founded by Tom Preston-Werner, Chris Wanstrath and PJ Hyett, GitHub now employs 158 'hubbernauts'.

GitHub raised $100m in funding last year from Silicon Valley venture capitalist firm, Andreessen Horowitz.

In January, Google released code onto GitHub to try and attract developers to the Google Cloud Platform, while Microsoft announced it will add GitHub support for its Visual Studio development-tool suite and Team Foundation app-lifecycle-management technologies.

  • Some Folks Still Don't Get The Hang Of Git

I've lost count of the number of times someone has forked one of my GitHub repos, only to sit on it and do nothing.

If you want a straight copy of my code, just do a "git clone" to your PC, making a GitHub fork is only necessary if you want to publish your own changes.
