On 2 September, Google launched Chrome, an open-source browser that sends a clear challenge to Microsoft in the way it lets users work with applications.

The beta is now available to anyone who wants to try it. If it matches up to its promise, Chrome could give a push to the transition to purely web-based computing and to working in the cloud.
