Google sends out invites for October 24 NY event; here comes the Nexus 5

Someone at Google apparently made a mistake (may be it was on purpose) and the long-awaited Nexus 5 briefly appeared on the Google Play Store, priced at $349.

Given Google's own slip up, as well as past Nexus announcements, all rumor roads lead to the announcement of the Nexus 5 running the new Android 4.4 "KitKat" operating system coming soon.

The long-awaited smartphone, which will likely be manufactured by LG, may have a couple different memory configurations, including 16GB and 32GB storage, but lacking microSD expansion capabilities as per previous iterations. Reports also point to a Snapdragon 800 processor, new camera technology, and include Qi wireless charging functionality.

Google's boost to the specification tables, unlike past Nexus devices that always had one or two things missing, could lead the Nexus 5 to being the Android device for the lucrative holiday season.

Similar to the wild success of the Apple iPhone, recent Nexus releases were very popular and stock sold out quickly. Stay close to your computer and keep your eye on the Google Play Store, because you never know when the Nexus 5 might appear again.

Update at 10:52 a.m. ET: According to further reports, there will be no new hardware at the event. We've clarified this post with updated headline to reflect the latest news.

  • Any surprises left?

We already know almost everything about android 4.4 and the nexus 5.

But then again this summer we knew everything about the nexus 7 and they surprised everyone with the chromecast.

    • Maybe the Google Now watch

It would be great to see a Google Now smartwatch come out with the Nexus 5.

      • Glass???

It would be nice to see a the consumer version of Glass released. Highly unlikely but would be nice.

  • "mistake" on purpose

This “mistake” was a PR leak to shut up the people claiming there will be a re-release of last year’s Nexus 4 to take the “low end” pricing and that this year’s Nexus 5 would be priced up to $500. This brief “accidental” Google Play posting was Google’s way of saying STFU on both ridiculous rumors.

$349 for 16GB Nexus 5 is actually the same price for 16GB as last year’s Nexus 4 — but with 5″ 1080p, smaller body, Snapdragon 800, multiple LTE bands, pentaband HSPA+, CDMA (for the "North America" Nexus5), and 8MP OIS camera.

So, if the 16GB is still $349, then the new 32GB will probably be $399?

  • Not that newsworthy

It is somewhat newsworthy, but won't have huge financial impact for Google or LG. Not knocking the device which looks like an outstanding value, however. I guess that they are waiting for things to come together- testing, supply and accessories before they officially announce it.
