Groupon announced on Monday it will acquire last-minute travel app Blink, a popular mobile service that allows users to create same-day hotel bookings at low prices.

The couponing giant said buying out the Madrid, Spain-based firm will help bolster its Groupon Getaways travel business, which launched in 2011, as it continues its m-commerce drive.

"The combination of a fantastic mobile app, same-day inventory management for properties and a team that is obsessed with mobile and last-minute travel will help us further expand our travel business as the go-to destination for great deals on great places to stay," said Groupon's Aaron Cooper in prepared remarks.

Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Blink supports users buying hotel rooms in 184 cities in 8 countries. Available for both iPhones and iPads, and Android devices, travelers are able to find the cheapest available accommodation possible.

The app will remain vastly the same, but will now go by the name "Blink by Groupon." The team will operate separately from its corporate parent, as the developers plow on with Groupon Getaways' travel offers.

Earlier this year, Groupon chief executive Andrew Mason was fired suddenly after missing fourth quarter earnings expectations.
