Peter David Gibson, a student from Hartlepool, has been charged with conspiracy under the Criminal Law Act 1977, the Metropolitan Police said in a statement on Thursday.

Gibson was arrested in Cleveland on 6 April by officers from the Metropolitan Police Central eCrime Unit (PCeU), a police spokeswoman told ZDNet UK. He has been bailed to appear at City of Westminster Magistrates' Court on 7 September.

ZDNet UK understands that Gibson was arrested in connection with an investigation into Anonymous. The group has claimed responsibility for distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks against a number of organisations, including MasterCard, PayPal and Visa; the security company HBGary; and the ACS:Law firm of solicitors.

The Metropolitan Police and the FBI, alongside other law enforcement agencies, have conducted a series of internationally co-ordinated swoops on Anonymous suspects.

The police netted five UK suspects in January, one of whom was released on 2 August without charge, and ZDNet UK understands Gibson was arrested in connection with these raids. The others have been bailed until dates in August and September, and have not been charged so far.

In addition, a teenager from South London was arrested in July, at the same that the FBI arrested 16 people.
