HP Compaq Presario C500

HP Compaq Presario C500

Summary: A good value laptop that outperforms many other notebooks at the same price -- the only feature missing is a DVD burner.

SHARE:

This laptop is definitely good value, with performance that's better than many other budget laptops we've tested in the past. The HP Compaq Presario C500 it is a solid product well worth consideration.

HP Compaq Presario C500Design
The Compaq Presario C500 is an attractive budget laptop which is finished in two tones of matte silver. The unit makes the most of the screen real estate with a very small bezel, and has a surprisingly small footprint. The unit is quite thick, however, due to the exhaust vents being underneath -- it even has feet to prop the laptop up off the desk, which is a little unusual.

All its ports and connectors are conveniently accessible on both sides of the laptop. There is actually nothing on the back you would need to reach around for -- not even the power supply -- which is great as you will never have to flip it around to plug anything in.

The build quality is mostly good, though the keyboard is somewhat flimsy -- it moves up and down as you type. Easily accessible above the keyboard are dedicated buttons for volume and wireless networking. These light up when active which is great for quick control and feature status.

Features
The Presario C500 is powered by an Intel 1.7Ghz Celeron Mobile processor. It may not be fast, but it gets the job done. The unit comes with 512MB RAM as standard and it has a spare memory slot so you can easily upgrade -- running Vista can be memory hungry, and so a minimum of 1GB is recommended -- even for the Basic version.

The C500's 1280 x 800 pixel widescreen has a nice gloss finish and offers quite reasonable levels of brightness. Only one combo drive included so you won't b able to burn DVDs but all other equipment levels are as you would expect, including all standard features such as 10/100 Ethernet, 802.11g wireless networking, a modem, three USB ports and VGA and S-Video connections.

Performance
Battery performance testing wasn't particularly noteworthy. Under the standard Battery Eater test its battery life was only average at one hour thirty-seven minutes. This is with wireless networking turned off, so you can expect slightly bigger impact on power if you want to use Wi-Fi.

Performance also wasn't spectacular compared to some of its bigger cousins. The Presario C500 achieved an overall 1507 with PCMark 05. Higher end laptops will generally score over 2000 so it is definitely not going to compete with them, but compared to other laptops in its price range this unit sits well above average.

Conclusion
At AU$999, this laptop is definitely good value. Features are reasonable, but a DVD burner would be a good addition to the package. Its performance is better than many other budget laptops we've tested in the past and overall it is a solid product well worth consideration.

  • C500 from Vista to XP

This is great news. I bought a c500 but it came with Vista; booting up took a 6 pack and cut lunch and the presentation is rubbish. I was thinking of playing "Format C" but was concerned that there would be problems. Now I shall go ahead with a settled mind.

My second question is about the dvdrw layer. It is just sooo slow is it because of the cd's i use or is it the speed of the laptop?? i hope someone can answer my questions.

  • Here's help with installing all the Compaq Presario C500 drivers

First, I've bought two of these beauties and both are on Windows XP. This is the best budget laptop anyone can get a hold of. Both my units work absolutely wonderfully. Talk about bang for the buck!

    I. On the new unit, first thing to do is partition the hard drive. Install Windows XP and partition your hard drive. I do this so i do not inadvertently mix my program files with my working documents (it's an Obsessive-Compulsive thing)

II. Having done the partitioning, you now install the Windows XP program. You will know that the installation is finished because you will already have a desktop on screen. You can already browse your hard drive.

III. DRIVERS' INSTALLATION (The audio driver is a bit difficult to install but we got it right)

    a) Download all the drivers for HP C501TU (don't ask why) from the HP website.
    http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareList?os=228&lc=en&cc=us&dlc=en&product=3347837&lang=en

    b) download drivers for XP:

    i) Conexant Audio Driver
    ii) Synaptic Touchpad
    iii) HP Quick Launch buttons
    iv) Conexant Modem Driver
    v) Wireless assistant driver

IMPORTANT NOTE: When you launch these drivers, they will not install...rather, they will only extract themselves into a directory in your C drive under the folder name "swsetup". Look for this folder.

    a) From this folder, go to the subfolder of the High Definition Audio Driver.
    b) Go to My Computer--Properties---hardware--device manager
    c) right click sound, video game controllers and update driver...choose "this time only"
    d) then choose "install from a specific location" and use the choose "don't search for driver, i will install"
    e) uncheck "show compatible hardware" (the whole list of hardware should now show)
    f) look for and highlight Generic USB Audio and then click the right side button "have a disk"
    g) browse for the c drive swsetup folder and go to subfolder of HD audio driver. look for the .dll file and double click this.
    h) everything in HD audio driver will automatically install into the computer.

AT THIS POINT YOU MUST RESTART THE COMPUTER SO THAT HD AUDIO DRIVER WILL BE COMPLETED.

    1) When your computer is finally up again, look for the subfolder for the modem driver and click the "setup" file and this will automatically install the modem.

    2) do the same for the wireless lan, touchpad and HP shortcut buttons.

RESTART YOUR COMPUTER AGAIN AND VOILA....ENJOY YOUR C500 TO THE MAX.....

by the way, I highly recommend AVG free Virus Cleaner software as your Virus defense. It is simply the best on the market.

    Cheers.
