HSBC customers in the UK suffered a major ATM and internet banking outage on Friday afternoon due to an issue with a server.

The server problems affected UK HSBC and FirstDirect customers, an HSBC spokesman told ZDNet UK on Friday.

"We hope the issue is fixed," said the spokesman. "It's bad at any time, but on a Friday afternoon, when it's busy, people want to withdraw money from ATMs. We apologise to everyone affected."

UK internet banking customers were the most severely affected, said the spokesman, who added that FirstDirect customers were also affected. Not every UK ATM was offline, the spokesman added.

The server began experiencing problems at 2.45pm, and was more or less back online by 5pm, said the spokesman.

Twitter users issued a stream of comments about the situation on Friday afternoon.

"Today I have spend 3 hours washing clothes and 2 hours chasing hsbc around in circles for my money," said Louise Ward.
