Confusion today, fusion tomorrow? The shape of IT to come
Dan Farber: Business process fusion, the theme of this year's Gartner Symposium/ITxpo, can be described as the art of marrying distinctly different business processes in a way that produces competitive advantage. Ex-cybersecurity czar Clarke issues gloomy report card
David Berlind: Richard Clarke has more bad news for IT execs. This year alone, the former White House cybersecurity chief told IT execs attending Gartner's Symposium, cyberattacks have shut down an ATM network, slowed the railroads, cancelled airline flights, and forced a nuclear power plant offline. Gartner predicts the future of IT
Dan Farber:
CEO Michael Feisher predicts that 2004 will be the year that most
companies make the turn from protecting profitability to driving growth. Looking further ahead, Gartner's prognosticators see
the next wave of technology--the confluence of pervasive wireless, real-time infrastructure, service-oriented architecture
and low power-consumption mobile devices--as a catalyst that could transform or kill entire industries and spawn new ones.
