Your item 4, switch to Linux.
Uh huh. People use Windows because they know how little most of the world wants to know anything about the computer and how it works. For the home users we're talking about, Linux is a techie self-indulgence.

Your item 3, buy a Mac.
This at least is easy to use, but too expensive. If Linux is for techies, Mac is for the gadget-loving rich.

Your item 2, switch browser and e-mail client.
During the anti-trust case, a Microsoft executive testified that anyone who wanted Netscape could download it. The government's attorney told him that two-thirds of people in a poll had never downloaded anything, didn't want to.

It's getting better, but most people, including me, are also satisfied with Outlook Express and IE. If they want more features on IE, they can download a freebie. That's what I mean about getting better.
The worry about malware of all sorts and the interest in alternative software is almost as techie as Linux.

Your item 1, installing SpywareBlaster.
I already use MRU-Blaster by javacool. Good software.
But if I could get 'em to download and update and use software, I'd have more luck with AdAware. When they use AdAware, they can see all the crap that has to be taken off the pc. That's dramatic enough they'll take my advice about using it without my having to say anything else. The usual reaction is equivalent is "Oh yeah, forgot that, okay."

For most people, the computer is an appliance which gets attention equivalent to the use they have for it. Not much.

Oh, and you should add, for people who are willing to spend some time on computers, a small but significant group, that they should remove the crap from the StartUp list. Lots of free software to do that. Amazing how much useful software wants to take over the world.
