Re: Comments on prevention
Anton,

I don't disagree with anything you are saying, but I do take issue with letting people off the hook so easily.

I am not a Linux or Mac zealot or even a Microsoft zealot for that matter. I simply stated what I felt were peoples' realistic options, here and now in June 2004, with regards to having a home PC connected to the internet. Want your computer to be usable? Take some steps to protect yourself. The spyware/adware/malware/trojan/keylogger problem has *exploded* over the past nine months, and the old "remember to update your anti-virus" just doesn't cut it anymore. The only reason I mentioned Macs and Linux as options is because this is largely a Windows problem. If people are sick of the constant battle, they can choose to educate themselves a bit on a non-Windows PC platform that does not suffer the same repeated fate Windows does. Or, they can learn how to fix their Windows PC and protect it from the bad stuff.

I am fast reaching the point where I will not make time for people with such a lousy, can't be bothered attitude. Bought a $2000 PC that you crippled with exploits inside of two weeks because you won't listen and aren't interested in learning how to protect yourself? Tough sh*t. You can suffer then.

I love to help people with their computers, but only when they are willing to listen, learn, and take some responsibility for their actions. Responses such as yours do nothing but excuse their laziness. Want to pay me $60 an hour or more to fix your screw ups? Fine. I won't think twice about it next time.
