- Certification authorities are independant because they must stand at arm's length from the object certified. It is time to use this principle as a standard, stop self-certifying secure systems, and have an external approval system capable of refuting its own certification should the environment change sufficiently to invalidate it. A challenge such as that reported to ZDNet should be tested by the certification authority and if validated, result in a suspended verification until the hole's fixed - and the suspension should be automatically notified to any user attempting to use the certified system.
