Great artical. And we really do need binary compatibility.
The thing that really blows about Linux is we don't have standard installation of applications that would work with any version of Linux, and the fact that device drivers have to be compiled for every kernel. We are making the lives for application vendors and suppliers of device drivers way, way to hard. You can not just pop the driver disk in like you can with Windows. Really Windows has one heck of an advantage here, and that won't go away soon. We really need to be heading in the direction that all applications and device drivers are backward compatible and NOT dependent on a kernel version or particular distribution. I get tired of "works for Red Hat 9".

Suns criticism of Red Hat is refreshing, even though I only use Red Hat, not Fedora. But it is not just a Red Hat problem. At some point, Linus needs to figure out how to make it so that old device drivers work on older kernels, AND visa-versa, as much as possible. Without that, we will lose the battle.
