Binary compatability only in a monopoly
*IF* your entire universe consists of Intel white boxes, binary compatability is feasable. But linux runs on Intel, AMD, PowerPC, Mac, Simputer, all the way up to mainframes. No, you *CANNOT* take an IBM Z-series binary and run it on an Intel X86.

What you *CAN* do is take the source code and

./configure --with-various-options
make
make install

and it will like run on the different platform, just like it will run under the different distro. For that to be possible, you need the source code, which is why the GPL.
