The Open Source Boogeyman
Red Hat is simply the largest example yet of why open source is not going to work on this scale: corporate entities do not give a flying leap about anything except their own shareholders. Since the only way to make any real money in open source is through lock-in and shoddy products, that's what they're going to give us.

Our idea of what open source is and means will have to change, and change drastically, before it can work both in the distributed laissez-faire network of individual developers *and* the rigid corporate culture of the business world. There are very good reasons why commercial software has prevailed in one world while open source has prevailed in the other, and when everybody stops shouting all the political rhetoric about which one is "better", maybe we'll actually start to SOLVE the problem instead of just beating on it with our respective hammers.
