Companies like Sun are not going away
Red Hat offers a distro of Linux and support for that distro, and Sun offers entire solutions. There is a market for complete solutions, and this is why, if they keep their head out of their butt, Sun should be around for a time to come.

From a stability/support standpoint, you can't go wrong on a Sun Box with Solaris. Same goes with HP's big iron and HPUX. Their boxes just work and the OS is more than adequate. Both Sun and HP both offer Linux on their hardware now too - and I guaratee you they wont sell you a box with 'APCI' bugs and whatnot. If they put Linux on a peice of their hardware, you can bet that it will work.

Redhat can only sell you support for their distro, and unless they start imposing strict limits on hardware configurations they support, things like the ACPI bug you decribed will be innevitable.
