agree with you. One reason I stopped using Dead Rat is because a lot of my hardware that worked with Mandrake or SuSE or Libranet, didn't work with Red Hat. A lot of applications that I could use with the afore mentioned distro's would work with Red Hat, but only after I had danced the pagan moon ritual and sacrificed Mrs. Mooneys cat to the OS dieties! It's ridiculous the issues I had to deal with using Red Hat.

But the driver issue is probably the largest hurdle we as a community need to overcome. And in theory, it shouldn't be an issue because of the fact that each distro is supposed to be using standard kernels and since device drivers are kernel level modules... why is there such a difference in how they damn thing works? Regardless how it's installed, tar.gz .deb emerge or .rpm a driver should install the same for all kernels regardless the distro configuration on top. And so long as the distros are adhering to the LSB this should not be an issue.
