Standards are facilitators not impediments
Standards in this IT community space of web services will be evolving for some time, so to wait for complete convergence is not reasonable. Instead examine the standards that have stability and marketshare TODAY. Align that with the business drivers and technical requirements TODAY. OASIS standards in the security areas of XML-Encryption, XML Digital Signature, and SAML are very mature and have broad adoption in the marketplace. The value and benefits gained today with these standards is significant but obviously are not all encompassing, which is not the point for businesses. Connecting to a business partner securely, reliablily, and with open web services technology are the reasons. EAI, CORBA, and EDI were the precursors and are important measuring guides to how much more effective, efficient, and open the web services solution provides. Of course the standards are continuing to move forward, as they should to incorporate more functionality, but let's not lose sight of what can be done today while still maintaining alignment with enhancements in the future.
