Migrating To A New Language
On the other hand, rewriting the code as SQL made me think about how that might improve the code's portability to some other language. For example, Microsoft's C# (a language that I wouldn't mind trying) or even Java (if I want to port the application to a non-Microsoft platform).

Generally if you are thinking about at some point evolving your application in C#, VS .Net has a utility that can convert VB applications to VB .Net code. Also if you do a search on Google, you will find third party utilities that can convert VB .Net code to C# code. (Note: doing the above conversions will probably not lead to the very best code [structurally], and you will probably have to do some tweaking after you have done the conversions) VS .Net also has interoperability features with Office applications ? if this is of help to you.

If you are going to take the step into OOP, and you would like to evolve your application using an OOP language, consider C#. It is a beautiful language, and the most striking things about it are its capability, tightness, and relative simplicity.
