Yes, FM7 HAS ODBC
wbfergus:

You need to check your facts on ODBC in FM7.

I'm not implying that Filemaker is a panacea, it still has a ways to go in some areas, but it IS "enterprise capable" at a certain scale.

However, if you have not looked at FM7, you are drawing some erronious conclusions. It is a SIGNIFICANT update.

FM7 has full ODBC drivers for the client and the server editions, including the ability to both read and write data, as well as create and modify tables. The old versions did not have this. It is also very XML capable.

In addition, SSL can be turned on with a flip of a button for the standard FM7 client and the Web Client. Tell me what other product does that? Filemaker security can now be integrated with a Windows 2003 and other directory services, so user security can be administered through you Windows Domain controller. Again a bit bonus at the enterprise level.

I would like to see better integration with SQL databases from WITHIN Filemaker, for example, there is absolutely no field binding with outside data sources.

What they have done with Instant Web Publishing is the most impressive. Again, it's not perfect, but the level of functionality vs. the simplicity is astonishing. I would like to see similar advances in ease of use from companies like Oracle and IBM.

Please check out FM7 when you get a chance and let me know what you think. You can download a free demo from their web site.

Again, I'm just an enduser, not a company rep.

Regards,
Lee Snover
