I agree with wbfergus. I do not have any experience with Filemaker but much experience with distributed applications. I would ask how Filemaker handles multi-threading, concurrent database connections, reord locking, transactions, transparency of the physical database location to the application, load balancing, HTTP, HTTPS, etc. These are enterprise concerns that may not be valid when you write your own code for your own company. They become very much a concern when the code is written for resale and then supported with many different configurations. I have a feeling if there was a tool that addressed all these concerns transparent to the programmer it would be technology lock in. I just don't see how it can be done and maintain design flexibility.
