Beware of Dell Kool-aid
Amazing. Dell claims there is no market for blades last year. Then when the market grows they decide to follow and jump back in - but they still don't know why the market is growing. Blades don't have to cost less to save money. How about intelligent provisioning - where slot 5 knows that a blade inserted into it is part of computing resource X. How does a 1U do that? How about intelligent failover - where any blade in slots 1-6 can be replaced automatically by blade 7? How does a 1U do that? Every 1U server requires 2 power cords, 2 PDU ports, either a KVM console cable and port or a remote mgmt cable (and another ethernet switch for the mgmt subnet) - or maybe both, then we've got 2 or more NIC cables and the ports on the network switch, we've got 2 SAN cables and 2 ports on the SAN fabric. It's pretty easy to put a dollar cost on each of those components. And that comparison vs Blades closes the gap vs 1U. And that's before the space saving, power cost savings, cooling cost savings, and dramatically reduced complexity of the infrastructure comes in. Blades are one of the easiest infrastructure cost justifications ever. And Dell's position on pricing is dubious since they will clearly be buying someone elses design and bringing it to market - not sure how they will drive the costs down to the points they are telling the press (through their "marketing" VP - of course - no engineers involved in this product...
