Nonsense!
Outbound connection controls are an essential part of client machine security.

The outbound connection and server controls for Zone Alarm (free version) are easily understood, used and taught, and are entirely sufficient for ordinary users. The assertion that they require any more knowledge than any other application to use is nonsense. I work with new users, some into their 80's with no computer experience at all, and they are very ready and able to "just say no" to requests by unknown programs to access the internet. And they know intuitively when the request is by a program they are using, and should be allowed.

I have never seen an instance of anything being "srcewed up" by blocking traffic, and seriously doubt that a machine or operating system function could be impaired by such blocking beyond the session to which the blocking applied.

Users also recognize that outbound connection requests can indicate infection by trojans, and require attention by a more experienced computer user.

The local firewall, with outbound connection connection control, is as essential to computer in today's environment as AV software. If there is one more useable, more effective, and less expensive than the free Zone Alarm, I have not been told of it.
