Using "something called a port"? Really!
It may be true that there is a software firewall still being marketed that still controls only port access, inbound and outbound. If so, I hope they are gone soon.

Outbound access to the internet is controlled by application aware firewalls such as Zone Alarm by application, not by port. The firewall requires authorization for outgoing connections for each application. Malware cannot gain access to outgoing ports without such authorization, without either duping the user into granting outgoing access, or mimicking (spoofing) a real application. Though the latter is possible, firewalls are increasingly including facilities for validating the application requesting connections.

Outbound firewalls remain an important tool for preventing access to the internet by malware on computers which have been infected, and for helping users to identify situations in which malware, or spyware, or adware are present on their machines and attempting to access the internet.

They also help to identify situations in which real and valid applications (Real Player, Acrobat) are attempting to access the internet repeatedly and unnecessarily. They provide amusement and a sense of increased security by letting users prevent such bandwidth hogging accesses, which are of unknown intent and which are not user initiated.
