Outbound blocking is a good idea, and easily managed too
I use, and many users I work with use Zone Alarm free version. Outbound blocking is so easily configured it is nearly transparent.

I am far from an expert, but am somewhat experienced. Many of the users I work with are inexperienced, some in their 80's. NONE have had serious problems learning to manage Zone Alarm free version, and once learned none have has problems using it.

It has saved them from problems with malware which would have infected their machines from websites and from VBscripts. And it has let many of them detect the presence of malware aquuired from email so it could be dealt with early, and prevented thier machines being recruited into bot armies.

Preventing access to the internet by malware on infected computers is an essential part of today's security environment. Outbound connection control is critical in doing that. Suggestions that outbound controls are onerous, or unnecesary are inappropriate and irresponsible.
