totally off base
"but doesn't "Users are like cattle, they'll go where the developers herd them" also apply to OSS?"

Ummm, why would it at all? Do OSS users seem to be more adept at using computers? Are OSS users relentlessly staying with an operating system that has proven to be a security failure time and time again? Are OSS users loyal to a company that openly derides, spies on, and toys with its user base?

"Users of OSS are just as dependent on developers as users of "proprietary" software"

No they're not AT ALL. A lot of users are..developers themselves! And what's even more exciting: if a person wanted to do some developing, they could. Never will that happen with open source.

"how many users really ever look at source code or try to make changes to it?"

You are obviously implying that you think this to be a small number. Do you have any evidence to back up your implications? Not everyone has to hack the kernel in order to tweak something or contribute..
