- Linux as it currently is, is not the answer
-
The ONLY real reason that Linux/unix systems dont experience virus attacks is because of near absolute LACK of UNITY amongst the different flavors the differences between each flavor are enough to preclude massive worms like the ones tha affect windows. I myself am trying to begin to move over to Linux (I'm trying out SUSE 9.1 right now.) my only real complaint about Linux, (I've tried debian, Knoppix, and Mandrake aside from SUSE.)) is the sheer difficulty involved in simply installing software, rhe fact that every single package system i have seen save for the apt system is just absolute garbage always complaining about dependencies essentially requiring you to use the commandline thereby rendering the gui package manager useless. While I honestly do want to know how to install and run my software from the command line as I do consider it the proper way to do things under Linux; I do not however appreciate the command line being my ONLY truly effective option. Linux needs a STANDARD of package install commands like apt-get with the added feature of downloading or at least attempting to download and in some cases compile (at user discression(sp?) of course.) source code since it has become clear that all auto install package systems are absolutely worthless. (I am fighting with SUSE to install GAIM .79 and everytime I click on the GAIM .79 rpm (granted it is unnofficial) it reinstalls GAIM .75 which came with suse 9.1 pro which wont even let me on yahoo or msn(because its missing some library I havent bothered to try and find yet.) It doesnt even install a broken .79 come on now what the hell is the point of someone making a .79 rpm for suse 9.1 if it wont even install a broken .79 to start???) I could go on and talk about trying to install media players like VLC and mplayer (mplayer is such crap anyway even when I do get it to work on a distro, at least vlc plays the files I need it to play as long as I can get the dammned thing to install, without having to download fonts.)
As for Macintosh...if M$ is the antichrist of the computer world seeing as it is essentially the head of all tables and all but de facto ruler of the computer world save for a select few who have either forsaken the mark or are attempting (perhaps in vain) to resist the mark of the beast known as Microsoft. Then Apple is the devil incarnate..as they not only propose to enslave us to thier OS (which is apparently more stable than windows since it is built on top of Unix.) they also want to enslave us in ragards to hardware.. a white washed world where you can only choose a pathetically WEAK Apple desktop/mobile for insanely overblown prices Take a look at Hypersonic-pc's amd equipped mobiles then look at Apple's mobiles if I was going to spend ~$2550usd I would wait and spend $2768usd on an amd 3200+ 64bit processor that changes clock speed on demand from applications equipped hpersonic mobile with cust black paint and a built in wireless turbo g network card with a gig of ram ddr 400mhz in two 512 so-dimms. What is even funnier is that even without customizing the hypersonic-pc mobile and removing the internal wireless g nic option I save over $100usd over Apple's 15inch 1.5ghz (the hell you going to do with that nowdays anyway?) mobile. Keep in mind that a 64 bit processor is inherently equivalent to twice the clock speed of any 32bit processor so eveb at 1.5ghz the AMD processor is equivalent to a 32bit 3ghz processor.
So to say that Machintosh is an alternative to is to simply be unaware that they ARE even WORSE than the beast that is Microsoft. Linux will NOT be a truly viable alternative for the non-tech savvy until there is some agreement at leastt in idea over how to make one of the most basic features less of a pain...the command line MUST be a TOOL for those who wish true control over thier system not the only real option if you wish to get anything installed on your given Linux distrobution! - Posted by: Darkintent Posted on: 07/10/04 You are currently: a Guest | Members login | Terms of Use
