IBM, Akamai team up on cloud security effort
IBM and Akamai on Tuesday outlined a cloud service to thwart distributed denial of service attacks for enterprises.
The partnership aims to head off DDoS attacks, which overwhelm Web sites and bring sites down. The attacks overload the bandwidth of a site or cloud application.
IBM found through its research that DDoS attacks are surging. The average large company has to filter 1,400 cyber attacks a week.
Akamai, a leading provider of Web caching technology, gives IBM an way to hit multiple enterprises at once. IBM said it plans to integrate Akamai's Web security tools into its cloud security services.
In its most recent State of the Internet report, Akamai documented a second-quarter rise in DDoS attacks. Akamai customers reported 318 attacks -- a 54 percent increase over the 208 reported in the first quarter. At 134 reported attacks, the Enterprise sector continued to be the leading target of DDoS attacks, followed by Commerce (91), Media and Entertainment (53), High Tech (23) and Public Sector (17).
The joint effort will focus on developing plans for response, mitigation, monitoring and intelligence.
