January is just about over and the quiet before the storm is as well with lots of mobile news hitting in February. Kevin and I were still able to find current topics in mobile tech to chat about in MobileTechRoundup show #288.

Topics in this show included:

  • Unlocking your phone is now illegal, although a carrier can still do it for you. Good, bad or just silly?
  • Galaxy Note 8.0: looks legit and interesting; particularly because of the speaker at the top. A small tablet with voice, perhaps.
  • Nokia Drive+ comes to other Windows Phones. Does this help Microsoft or Nokia?
  • Nokia announces Nokia Music+ subscription service for Lumia owners
  • Vine for iOS, Twitter video service
  • First thoughts of the Acer W510 Windows 8 tablet / dock. Build quality, specs, performance, usage.

Running time: 57 minutes

  • Good good good!

And it's a good thing as well phone unlocking is to be made illegal. My pastor has continually spoken out against this immoral behaviour, which is much the same as attempting to circumvent regional lockout on products, which again gives corporations and subsequently consumers a much greater level of control, and value. I hope that appropriately hefty sentences are handed out for those caught unlocking.

Windows 8 of course is great on whatever machine it's put on. Metro really is the future, and is the first time I've been excited by technology since the iPad.

    • wow . . .

      Wow.

I appreciate that you're being sarcastic, but I'm not sure I appreciate the knock against pastors :/.

      • I am not being sarcastic

On the contrary, I am not being sarcastic. The problem these days is that when you espouse views that don't fit with the brainwashed but vocal minority of Windows 8 haters and Linux freetards who think copyright and the rights of corporations should be ignored, you are assumed to either be a shill or alternatively a troll.

And there is definitely no knock against pastors, mine is heavily into technology and we have a lot of in depth discussions. And we share the same view about these 'something for nothing' idiot Linux fans. Hard work deserves payment, and corporations who have come up with these devices deserved to be protected by law by those who wish to circumvent protection and locking put in and reverse engineer.

Absolutely. It's a direct violation of the Tenth Commandment.

By the way, which Commandment says slavery is wrong?

  • Illegal phone unlocking, Acer Windows 8, Galaxy Note 8

and who made them illegal in the very first place? the more hardwares unlocked, the more popular a brand becomes. compaq in its early years managed to unseat ibm because consumers believed in free enterprise. reverse engineering the pc bios, had it happened today, could put those engineers in the slammer. just the thought of it is chilling ...

  • It is not illegal.

If you hadn't bought the phone in 2013 it is perfectly legal and off contract phones are allowed as well.

Crud, I unlocked two notes today myself.

  • Unlocking? Illegal??

You paid for it and it´s yours. You should be able to do with it what & how you like. What the heck do pastors and/or religion have to do with this. Stay focused!

  • The world is bigger...

Phone unlocking in the US might be illegal, in the rest of the civilized world it isn't
