iOS 7.1 beta 3 overhauls Phone app; reduces parallax effect

Summary: Developer builds of iOS 7.1 show that Apple has made some significant changes to its mobile OS, specifically to tone down the brightness and parallax effect.

Apple released iOS 7.1 beta 3 to developers on January 7 and with it a revamped Phone app. As you can see by these screenshots, courtesy of iClarified, Apple has changed many of the rectangular bars found in iOS 7.0.x (left) to round buttons in iOS 7.1 (right):

In addition to the changes in the Phone app, Apple has toned down some iOS 7 elements that gave some users motion sickeness (including vertigo and dizzyness) with slightly darker Phone, Messages, and FaceTime icons, a new option to reduce iOS 7's white point (found in Accessibility's Contrast menu) which joins both the "Button Shapes" and Darken Colors options that were added in an older iOS 7.1 beta, and a new option to turn parallax on or off when setting wallpapers.

report from BGR, and a spate of remaining bugs, suggest that iOS 7.1 probably won't be released until March.

  • Keep These Changes Coming

Changes, or I like to say corrections like these to iOS7 need to keep coming.

  • Re: iOS 7.1 beta 3 overhauls Phone app; reduces parallax effect....

Here we have further evidence that Apple are listening to the consumer and their concerns regarding iOS7.

That being said reports of some feeling unwell whilst using iOS7 have been blown up out of all proportion.

As with all new platforms despite the predictable criticism from the usual quarters iOS7 overall has been reasonably well received. iOS7 is certainly excellent on my iPhone 5 and iPad Mini.

With the introduction of iOS7.1 and the changes being made no doubt as always criticism will once again come from the usual quarters and no matter what Apple do with iOS7 it will not be good enough but then of course one needs to remember many of those critics work with Android.

    • Anything that Apple do...

So when Apple make such changes it's seen as a good thing because they're "listening to the consumer", whereas when Microsoft make such changes, for example re-adding the Start button for those who just couldn't tap the windows key/button, it's deemed 'admitting defeat' or 'backtracking'.

      • Reintroducing the Start Button...

Microsoft are admitting that they got it wrong. It would be like Apple removing the Dock from OS X and saying you now need to launch all apps via Spotlight or Finder. It's rediculous that Microsoft could make such a silly mistake. Fair enough removing the start button on a tablet but not on a PC. It's stupid - and yes I am an Apple troll for this very reason. Apple consider the product and user they are building the said OS for. Microsoft clearly didn't.

I bet they were just holding their phone wrong.

      • Feeling sick

I use my iPhone and iPad to death and I've never felt sick. It must very some Android scam.

        • The parallax can cause a feeling of disorientation

I have an ipad mini 2 and a nexus 5. I am not an android or apple troll, just trying to be honest. I do hate microsoft but I don't try to just say lies about them and be a troll like MS shills Loverock davidson and Owlllnet (who appears to have given up on chromebook attacks lately as they appear to be starting to take off. The home office at MS fears it may be backfiring and has said to lay low for a while).

Anyway, I can see how the parallax may give a feeling of disorientation. (various crazy live wallpapers have been on android for a long time so the parallax was nothing new) . It doesn't happen to me but since the Ipads are more used by sensitive grandma-type people than other brands, I can see more complaints likely. Also there are always people who are looking for class action lawsuit opportunities so it just may be those types of people saying it.

          • Why did you feel the need to state that you hate Microsoft?

It has no bearing on the article or your comment.

    • Agree with you entirely.

Yes the Android trolls will always be around.

  • About time they followed the design rules

I was sondering when they were going to fix those buttons.

the Microsoft Metro design rules clearly states that buttons should be either pure text or round buttons. Now with that cleared up maybe Apple can focus on some really useful new features... like Live Tiles ;-)

    • Re: Live Tiles....

Non responsive. Utterly useless feature. I had a WP and couldn't get rid of it quick enough.

      • Sure you did,

        You were being sarcastic, right?
        William.Farrel
        • Actually...

...the first thing I do on Windows on the PC is turn the live tiles off. Too much bouncing around and clamouring for attention. With all the live tiles on it makes the start screen feel so cluttered, and that's on a 27" display. My father in law has a Windows Phone (a Lumia 925) and while it's a nice phone that home screen winds me up...

          • To each his own...

I love my live tiles. Thankfully there's OS variety, so we can chose what we enjoy.

    Could the icons be smaller?

  • Overhaul?

I don't consider changing square buttons to round ones an overhaul!
    Anthony Hunter
    • I kind of like the square ones...

...I hope those screenshots aren't close to production release, because they look terrible, especially the incoming call one.
      Ben_E
    • This is not just about square buttons..

...This is about 'go round everywhere '.

  • trying to make a SILK PURSE out of a SOW'S EAR...

these aesthetic changes and any other in iOS7 is like "trying to make a silk purse out of a sow's ear". iOS7 is a major aesthetic flop! jarring and uncomfortable - not rasy on the eyes. sorry Jony.
