Japan has overtaken the United States in being the top revenue generator for Google Play, marking the first time the latter is not on the top of the list. The achievement was helped by the fact that publishers in Asia are starting to invest in global content which appeals to a wider consumer demographic.
According to the latest App Annie Index released Thursday, the app store analytics service provider noted that Japan made up 29 percent share of revenue for Google's appstore, surpassing the United States' 26 percent. This shift in dominance demonstrates how app publishers in Japan are starting to monetize their software better and attracting more consumer spend, it explained.
On a regional level, App Annie pointed out the East-West "barrier" is coming down.
"Indeed in recent months, we're starting to see more East Asian publishers invest in global content with significant commercial success. For October 2012, 7 of the top 10 publishers on Google Play by revenue are Japanese or Korean," it stated.
The report also highlighted game publishers as the savviest among app developers in monetizing their products, on both Apple App Store and Google Play. In fact, 9 of the top 10 publishers by revenue on both platforms are game publishers, it noted.
