LG won the 2014 Brill Award in the design category for its data center at Busan, South Korea. The awards are organised by the Uptime Institute.

The institute, the sole international assessor of data center competencies worldwide, inaugurated the awards last year to recognize the most efficient data centers in five categories – capital deployment, technology, design, operations and overall management.

One hundred data centers from 19 countries were shortlisted, and 18 including LG CNS were named winners.

Taiwan Mobile was the only other winner in Asia, while other winners include eBay and Spain’s Telefonica.

LG estimates there are around 23,000 data centers worldwide, and stressed that the recent success meant it was “now recognized as a data center powerhouse within the global top 0.1 percent.”

The company’s Busan Global Data Center boasts an innovative cooling system using natural wind currents to cool heated hardware, and is extremely energy-efficient. It is also the only Korean data center immune to earthquakes up to 8.0 magnitude.

LG built the data center at the seaside city to secure more clients from Japan and South East Asia. Local clients include Kakao, the provider of Kakao Talk, Korea’s most popular mobile messenger service.
